Teaching 1:1 drum lessons to students of all ages in San Francisco and the peninsula

About the Instructor
Teacher Ming
Hello! My name is Ming Lam, it's nice to meet you! I'm a drummer and recording artist based in San Francisco. I'm currently a drum instructor at Artis School of Music in Belmont, and offer independent lessons in San Francisco.I have live performance experience drumming multiple styles, including rock, jazz, and funk. My drum lessons prioritize technique, coordination, and the pocket: teaching students to feel the pulse and groove of music in both body and mind. My approach to teaching takes into account students' individual goals, pace, and learning needs.Teaching music, I've seen many students discouraged by the belief that musicians have natural powers or technical abilities beyond their own reach. My mission is to break this barrier and demystify the process to make music accessible to all levels.

Student Reviews
“Teacher Ming is an excellent drum teacher. Our son, who is in 7th grade, is currently enrolled in Teacher Ming’s drum class, and we are very happy with our son’s progress. After just a month of drum lessons, our son was able to do a live performance in church. Teacher Ming is very sincere in sharing his skills and expertise with his students, and is very approachable and easy to communicate with."
Parents of Abe M., 13 years old, 8th grade student
"Teacher Ming is fantastic with young kids! He makes each lesson fun and easy to follow while keeping them engaged and focused. Miles had a bit of interest in drums when he started, and thanks to Teacher Ming’s guidance, that interest has grown into a passion. Now he looks forward to class every week, it’s the highlight of his routine!"
Parents of Miles Z., 5 years old, TK/Preschool
"Teacher Ming is giving my 6yo the gift of loving learning to play drums! He's thoughtful, kind, precise, playful and humble. As a lifelong teacher of various subjects, I especially appreciate seeing Teacher Ming's intuitive way of reading and responding to the actual child in front of him - truly the sign of a gifted teacher. For example, my kid was working hard at getting a certain drum sequence right and couldn't fully drop into playing it. Teacher Ming suggested he close his eyes, and I watched my 6yo come alive with the feeling of making music in his body. It was the perfect cue at the perfect moment - and a huge joy to watch my kid discover his own relationship to art as a result! We recommend Teacher Ming!"
Parents of Day T., 6 years old, First grade
"We’ve had an incredible experience with Teacher Ming as our child’s drum teacher. From the very first lesson, it was clear that he had a special gift for working with kids. He connects with students in a way that makes them feel confident, excited, and eager to learn. What stands out most is how Teacher Ming makes drumming fun while still teaching solid technique and discipline. Our child has not only improved musically but has developed a real passion for playing drums—thanks to the encouragement and inspiration he brings to every lesson. If you're looking for a drum teacher who can truly spark a love of music in your child, look no further. Teacher Ming is patient, enthusiastic, and an amazing role model. We feel so lucky to have found him!"
